McGinnis: Weird, wonderful world of Christmas toy shopping

Ah the blessed Christmas season, a time when parents set forth to find the latest and greatest toys for their little ones.

Or else.

Given my tendency to study the behaviors of children the way a cultural anthropologist might, I wanted to see what some of the hottest, most sought-after things were for 2011.

While everyone knows Let's Rock Elmo and LaLa Loopsie are big biz this year, a light scan of the Internet turned up both the sublime and ridiculous. Some of it makes you ask "What were they thinking?" Others elicit "Why didn't I think of that?"

DOGGIE DOO GAME — First developed in Europe, the little plastic dog that poops play dough is becoming a hit in the U.S. The greatest virtue of the game, which includes feeding the dog doughy "treats," squeezing his leash and waiting for the sound-appropriate outcome, is that to win you must clean up after the dog. Everybody wins when we clean up after our dogs.

SING-A-MA-JIGS — Having long believed Fisher Price could never outdo the irritation factor of its classic Popcorn Popper, the folks at FP's R&D unit have raised the bar. Not only do Sing-a-Ma-Jigs electronically babble or play a tune when their tummy is squeezed (the Red one sings "Where Has My Little Dog Gone," a blue one "When the Saints Go Marching In") but they can digitally "hear" each other and harmonize. Toddlers, for whom the toys are intended might find it difficult to simultaneously squeeze two or more tummies for this effect but parents will get hours of entertainment making their own YouTube videos.

Remote Control Inflatable Flying Fish Is Your Freakishly Fun Deal of the Day
This big ass remote control flying fish just went on sale and I can't figure out for the life of me which fish is the better call. Do I wanna pull a prank on my brother when he wakes up with the mother freakin' shark? Or is the giant clownfish lovable

Starting the season
“I'm going to ask him for an Air Swimmer (a remote control inflatable flying shark),” said 7-year-old Fernando Rojas, clutching a half-eaten gingerbread cookie he made at the cookie-decorating booth. Rojas, sporting a Santa's hat modified to look like
