Schools cope with weaponry

Onslow County Schools had an unusual rash of incidents involving students bringing BB guns to school this year.

Three elementary students were caught with unloaded BB guns in schools in February. Two Southwest Elementary School students, a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old, were caught in two separate incidents within two days and a 7-year-old Blue Creek Elementary School student had a BB gun confiscated in his backpack at school a week later.

On March 25, a fourth grader at Morton Elementary School was charged with making weapons and selling them in school. The student was taking razor blades and other sharp objects and inserting them into felt-tip pens and markers, according to the Onslow County Sheriff. Three other students at the same school faced school suspension and juvenile petitions related to that incident.

In April a 12-year-old Hunters Creek Middle School student was seen on the school bus loading a BB gun pistol, but for the first time the weapon was loaded. The student was reported to the school’s student resource officer and school administrators, who escorted the student to his locker and found the loaded BB pistol.
