Fairfax keeping eye on uranium mining

The largest drinking water provider in Virginia is closely watching the uranium mining debate, and recently released its own uranium report.

Fairfax Water’s board of directors sponsored an $85,000 study to become better informed about potential risks and impacts of uranium mining, as the General Assembly may debate lifting the state’s 30-year uranium mining moratorium as early as next session.

For Fairfax Water in Northern Virginia, the uranium question isn’t just a Pittsylvania County issue. While Coles Hill is the only known economically viable uranium deposit in Virginia, utility board chair Phil Allin said the possibility exists for uranium to be found elsewhere in Virginia, depending on the demand and price of uranium, future exploration and technology.

According to the National Academy of Sciences report, more than 55 elevated uranium occurrences have been identified in Virginia, and only the Coles Hill deposit appears to be “potentially economically viable at present.”
