ARTS & ANTIQUES: Show off family heirlooms or share them as gifts

By Dr. Lori

CORRESPONDENT

The holiday season is a time for holiday parties, family get-togethers and open houses.

With family and friends gathered to enjoy the season, it perfectly highlights your own history by featuring vintage photos and antique objects from days gone by.

These five tips will make this holiday season a time to reminisce about your family via your heirlooms and treasures.

Display old family photos

Many young family members probably don't know their historical tidbits. Those antiques and collectibles passed down through the generations reveal much about your background. To share this history with all the family, display objects that reflect days gone by.

A photo album is the typical vehicle for conversations about family history. Like photos, antique and vintage objects on display also reveal much about how ancestors really lived.

Use Grandma's stuff

Highlight cherished collections like your mother's salt-and-pepper sets, Grandma's cookie jars and cake plates. While a previous generation's antique china typically gains immediate attention at family gatherings, don't forget Grandpa's military uniforms or sports trophies. Such items not only have significant monetary value, but also reflect the family's past. At holiday time, let these objects recount the family heritage.
